Question:
Why does Friar Lawrence make such a long lecture telling Romeo he is making a foolish decision? Shakepeare could have made the line much shorter. Why is Friar Lawrence's opinion so important to the play?
When Friar Laurence is giving Romeo his speel about him giving up on Juliet and his love Friar Laurence says, "Why rail'st thou on thy birth, the heaven, and earth..since birth and heaven and earth, all three do meet..."(176,Act 3, Scene 3.) Friar Laurence gives a religious referance refering to what ?
Characterization of Romeo?
Romeo is being a wuss in Friar Laurence's cell. During Romeo soliloquy, Romeo says," 'Tis torture [Tis is his banishment]and not mercy. ...Still blush, as thinking their own kisses sin. But Romeo may not. He is banished. Flies may do this, but i from this must fly.'"(168, lines 39-41). Romeo thinks that he cannot his Juliet due to what he has done to Tybalt. Also he is being a wuss by saying that flies are better off kissing her, and he is not worthy enough to kiss her.
What is Friar Lawrence's tone in this scene? What is Romeo's?
Answer to Mrs. Wells: What appeals does Friar Laurence use in his lines to Romeo?
In Friar Lawrence's "speech" to Romeo, he uses emotional appeals by appealing to his sympathy/pity emotions and his need for acceptance. Friar Lawrence says "Fie, fie, thou shamest thy shape, thy love, thy wit......"(Act 3, Scene 3, 176), he is basically saying Romeo is bringing shame to himself and Friar is making Romeo feel sympathetic about himself and pity himself. Friar also states "..Thy Juliet is alive, For whose dear sake thou was but lately dead--there art thou happy. Tybalt would kill thee, But thou slew'st Tybalt--there art thou happy"(Act 3, Scene 3, 176), he is saying that Juliet is the reason for all of this, so be happy she is alive. And also he should be happy that he is alive because Tybalt wanted to kill him, but he killed Tybalt instead. Lawrence is saying Romeo needs to accept these things and go on with life.
